Formula and measurement method
Volumetric kg = length × width × height (cm) × quantity ÷ divisor.
Use the outside dimensions of the packed carton or pallet, not the product dimensions before packing. Round and rating rules can differ by airline, service and contract.
- Measure the packed outer length, width and height in centimetres.
- Multiply by the number of identical packages and divide by the selected planning divisor.
- Compare the result with actual gross weight; use the larger figure as the planning chargeable-weight reference.
Worked examples
- 60 × 40 × 50 cm × 2; gross 28 kg → ÷6000 = 40 kg; ÷5000 = 48 kg; Planning chargeable weight: 40 / 48 kg*
- 40 × 30 × 30 cm × 5; gross 40 kg → ÷6000 = 30 kg; ÷5000 = 36 kg; Planning chargeable weight: 40 kg*

6000 vs 5000: which divisor should I use?
6000 and 5000 are both common planning references in international air cargo and courier contexts, but there is no single divisor that is correct for every airline, product or contract.
